The Significance of Liska in Jewish History and Religion



From the 19th century, Liska has served as a focal point of Jewish community and tradition. Annually, thousands of pilgrims visit Liska, honoring Tzvi Hirsh Liska’s memory. Liska contains over 500 Jewish historical sites, from cemeteries to synagogues, embodying a storied heritage. In the 1800s, about 3,000 Jews lived in Liska, forming a rich and vibrant community. Liska’s heritage resonates in neighboring communities such as Kerestir and throughout Hungary. About 5,000 pilgrims and tourists visit Liska each year, drawn by its historical and spiritual atmosphere.


Efforts to preserve Liska’s heritage are supported by both local and international groups.
